Nail Your Goals: Break Through the Barriers Holding You Back with Confidence
Ever set a goal, only to feel stuck or lose momentum along the way? You’re not alone. Whether it’s personal or professional, the gap between dreaming and doing can feel daunting. Obstacles creep in—time, distractions, or self-doubt—and suddenly your vision seems just out of reach.
But here’s the thing: achieving your goals isn’t about being perfect or endlessly motivated. It’s about setting up your goals with intention, clarity, and the right tools to keep moving forward, even when life throws curveballs.
In this post, I’ll share three powerful strategies that help you break free of barriers, focus your energy, and stay on track. These methods have been game-changers for my coaching clients—and for me! Whether you’re just starting out or looking to recommit to your goals, these tools will help you transform ambition into action.
Start with Your ‘Why’
When clients come to me for coaching, we always start with this question: What’s driving this goal? What matters most about this to you? It might seem simple, but uncovering your deeper purpose is essential to staying motivated when the going gets tough. Without it, even the best-laid plans can feel empty or uninspiring.
In the ‘Nail Your Goals’ module in the Inside-Out ACADEMY self-coaching platform, one of the first tools I’d advise you to explore is “Understanding the WHY of Your Goals.” This exercise digs into your values and motivations, helping you connect with what truly matters.
Instead of setting a goal because you think you should (like starting that gym membership or chasing a promotion), this step helps you set goals that resonate with your heart and values. When you’re clear on your ‘why,’ obstacles become easier to navigate, and you’ll find the energy to keep going—even on tough days.
“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” — Friedrich Nietzsche
Create SMART Goals for a Clear Path
Once you’ve found your ‘why,’ it’s time to turn your vision into an actionable plan. That’s where SMART goals come in—goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Goal setting is so much easier to stick with when each step along the way is set up for success.
SMART goals act as a roadmap. They break big, overwhelming dreams into smaller, achievable steps. For example:
– Instead of saying, “I want to get healthier,” you could say, “I’ll commit to going for a 30-minute walk three times a week on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays during my lunch break for the next two months.” This is bringing future desires into current commitment and making them achievable.
This clarity reduces overwhelm and gives you small wins to celebrate along the way. In coaching sessions, I often remind clients that every big success starts with small, intentional steps. SMART goals are about progress and learning along the way, not perfection. They help turn complaints into dreams and dreams into action.

Overcome Obstacles with the ‘Build a Bridge’ Tool
Even with a clear plan and strong, personal motivation, life doesn’t always cooperate. Plans shift, unexpected challenges pop up, or old inner-chatter and habits creep back in. That’s when it’s time to use the ‘Build a Bridge’ exercise—a favourite from the ACADEMY.
This tool encourages you to stay connected to your goal, but also to pause, reflect, and adapt. Here’s how it works:
– Focus on the future. Imagine what it would be like to have achieved this goal and who else is being positively impacted as well as how you are benefitting.
– Consider all the resources you already have and what you CAN do right now.
– Brainstorm possible obstacles and creative ways to build a safety net and overcome or work around them.
– Use every setback as a chance to learn and grow.
One client shared, “I used to give up when things didn’t go perfectly. But this tool taught me how to think creatively and stay flexible. I’ve learned to trust myself and find solutions, even when things get tough.”
It’s not about avoiding challenges—it’s about learning how to keep moving forward, one step at a time and celebrating the learning along the way.
