The Time is Now – Part 2

Part Two: Yesterday

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.”

-Abraham Lincoln

We all enter this life with perfect potential, but our experiences, both positive and negative, sculpt our beliefs, triggers, tendencies, fears, relationship patterns and truths. In short, our pasts mould and form our current reality. Thoughts and reactions we have to experience and stimuli become opinions and then, over time, the moulding and forming become indisputable, stone-hard fact.

These ‘facts’ might be about other people and sound something like:

  • They never…
  • He always…
  • She’ll flip if…
  • They’ll be so…,
  • He is too…,
  • She is not…,
  • They’ll definitely…,
  • if only they wouldn’t…
  • It’s alright for them!

They might be about yourself and sound something like:

  • I’ve never been very…
  • I’ll never be…
  • I am always so…
  • I know my place…
  • I know my limitations…
  • I know what will happen if I…
  • I’m not…enough
  • I’m too…
  • It’s no use…
  • There’s no point…
  • There’s no way I could…

Or your situation and sound something like:

  • It’s hopeless
  • it’s not important
  • One day…
  • I know exactly what will happen
  • That’s way too risky
  • What if..?
  • Why bother..?
  • What’s the point..?
  • Nothing will change
  • Who’s going to… if I don’t
  • I can’t do anything until…

In Part One of ‘The Time is Now’ Blog we looked at what our story and characters look like and how these keep us wishing and waiting for tomorrow. I wonder if you recognise your character lines or those of other characters in your daily story in this list? I certainly do! It is by no means a complete list so feel free to add your own, personal examples.

The most important thing to realise here is a tough one to hear, but I will break it to you gently, yours is only one, very personal reality. It isn’t completely true for anyone else. It has been built up around you one learning experience at a time over all the years you have been alive. It was built, stone by careful stone, to protect you, to keep you safe and well within your comfort zone. It grew up like a safe fortress, a place of security for you to face the slings and arrows of the world.

The problem is that, in subconsciously building a wall of lessons-learned-security, we only notice too late, if at all, that what we have actually built is a strong and sturdy prison wall. This wall is generally way too high for us to be able to see alternative realities beyond that wall and our outlook, perspective and possibilities become such a small percentage of what they could potentially be.

Looking at the points in the lists above that resonated with you:

  • Do you still believe that this ‘fact’ is set in reality-stone?
  • Really set in stone?
  • Always set in stone?
  • Do you remember where this stone might have come from?
  • Do you remember a time before this belief was set in stone?
  • What was different before you started carrying that extra stone around with you?
  • What if there was a way to get back to that beautiful and perfect potential?
  • What if coaching offered you a safe place to remove the parts that no longer serve you and hold you back?
  • What if you were given the choice to reset your values, beliefs, identity and reality?
  • What if you could choose?
  • What if you had all the support you needed?
  • Where would you start?

“In every block of marble I see a statue…I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it.”
– Michelangelo

Coaching gives you a new set of lenses that enable you to see your wall, your story, the protection that has built up around you like marble in glorious technicolour. Coaching gives you the chance to stop, breathe and see what actually is; the statue and the marble, the chisel and the sculptor, the past and the future, and helps you create the masterpiece potential within you – now.

By all means, open the door to yesterday. Invite it in, accept it, make friends with it, raise a glass and reminisce together over lessons learned and data collected from life. Invite the future to join you and let it excite you with possibilities and ideas, but with one conditional question:

Is this in service of the masterpiece I am sculpting? Is it what I want and choose for myself today, at this moment?

If so, fantastic – have a ball! All experiences are lessons and valuable data. All the information you gather, a lifetime of experimentation, is only valuable and useful to us and our future stories if we notice, look at and understand what that value is, which data is beneficial and in service to us and our conscious choices and then, and this is where the magic lies…

…let it go again.

If you choose to take a journey to discover your own inner ‘Masterpiece’, remember that it took Michelangelo 3 years to create the ‘lovely apparition’ of his ‘David’. The transformation from years of stone to a masterpiece doesn’t happen overnight, not even with a little coaching magic, so keep chipping away. The masterpiece is in there.

“Smile, Breathe and go slowly.”

– Thich Nhat Hanh

So, what is waiting to be discovered in your block of marble?

What do you need right now in order to make those first hammer and chisel taps?

If you want to find out more about the wall of old lessons, the limiting beliefs that created it and how to break free of the stone that no longer serves your potential, you don’t have to do it alone. Work with Inside-Out Coaching if you want to be free, yet supported and safe, to choose your reality and release your David.
